Cougars on Undefeated Run

Don’t look now, but the football team may be on its greatest winning streak of all-time.  Over the last three years, the team has won its last nine games.  Last year, the Cougars finished with a perfect 6-0 record under the guidance of captain and quarterback, Rob P.  This year a new team, primarily composed of 8th graders, takes the field.  Led by captains Greg B., Elliot F. and Bernard P., the team has compiled a 3-0 record so far.  “The team works very hard every day of football season,” says Coach Weller. “We practice in every kind of weather, and never take a day off.  We have developed an attitude that we win together and we lose together, and that the only speed on the football field is 150%.  The players and the 8th graders, in particular, do a good job picking one another up when we need to work hard, instead of giving up or complaining.” Mr. Weller runs his team old school, using primarily a running game on offense.  With running backs Kyle B. and Asanti J,. they have a multi-dimensional attack that includes both power and speed.  In their first game, they completed a 40-0 romp of

Shattered: The Story Of Steriods in Baseball

Shattered: The Story Of Steriods in Baseball

When I was ten, baseball couldn’t have been more perfect. Everything about the game fascinated me. I loved to play it, watch it and read about the players who became my heroes. Even though baseball players could hit a ball 500 feet and throw 90 mph, I realized they were still human beings. I knew they made mistakes. I just didn’t realize how big those mistakes could be. October 1988: Washington Post baseball writer Thomas Boswell claims Jose Canseco is “the most conspicuous example of a player who has made himself great with steroids.”  Canseco denies the claims.  Canseco, the bronzed Oakland Athletic slugger, has just become the first player to hit 40 home runs and have 40 steals in a single season.  He goes on to win the MVP award at the end of the year.  This sets in motion the most devastating scandal ever to hit professional sports. Over its 141 year history, baseball has endured many hardships and weathered many scandals, from the notorious spitball era, when players would rub tobacco and dirt on the ball, making it impossible to see it, to the Black Sox scandal of 1919.  Baseball has come out damaged but intact.  It survived

Middle School Baseball Preview

March 25, 2009

It’s finally spring again which means it’s time for some baseball. This year’s MKA baseball team is one of the brightest in years. “This year,” Coach Smith said, “we actually have a group of kids where every single one of them can actually throw and catch.” It is true that this year has an abundance of very good 8th graders and a group of very promising 7th graders. The coaches of this year’s squad are Mr. Ruddy and Mr. Smith. In addition, Andrew Powers, a former MKA standout, is coming back to help coach the team. The captain of this year’s team is pitcher/ shortstop Rob Pannullo. At first, Coach Smith was unsure if there would be an A and B team.  There were a lot of good players and it was difficult to decide.  For a week, tryouts raged for an hour were kids were tested on their hitting, fielding and pitching abilities. In the end, an A team was agreed upon that featured 8th graders Rob Panullo, P.C. Provost, Jesse Naar, Nick Pai, Todd Morici, Zack Yanes, Anthony Donatiello, Ryan Durando and Mike Zage.  In addition, four 7th graders, Nic Harris, Francis Keane, Aaron Stagoff-Belfort and Josh Blatt

The Softball Scoop

March 24, 2009

The spring sports season is finally starting! Every day from three to four o’clock, masses of students pour through the locker room doors to get ready for practice. Softball is one of the most popular sports at MKA. The 2009 softball team includes people who have played all their lives, and some people who have never held a bat or worn a mitt before. However, with the help and support of coaches Janelli, Sullivan and Tully, playersnew and old are in for a season of success. A typical practice for the softball team includes batting practice, fielding with imaginary situations and sometimes a scrimmage. 7th grader Michelle Custode sys that her favorite part of practice is “throwing and the different exercises we do for throwing. Oh, also when we practice pop flies and grounders.” After their long wait for the first game, the girls on the team screamed and cheered for a successful game. Unfortunately, they lost the game, but that didn’t shoot down their high hopes for future games. Everyone on the team has a different opinion on which is the most fun position to play. For instance, Obsidian Lewin-Holmes loves to play in the outfield because she loves
