Student-Faculty Basketball Pre-Game

February 2, 2012
By

This is the year for the 7th annual student faculty basketball game. A big tradition here at MKA, large donations are made by the money we raise. This year, MKA will be supporting Team Zoey primarily, but also the Montclair Volunteer  Ambulance Department. Team Zoey supports kids born with progeria; this causes children to age 7 to 10 times faster. Now lets get the happy stuff: t-shirts will be sold the week of the 15th. These can be worn on any spirit day. The coin drive jars are out and the student government urges you to bring in as much money as possible; the only rule is that you can not bring pennies. This year’s players include: Faculty/Staff Men Randy Kleinman Ken Smith Leon Shade Gary Pacheco Reshan Richards Alex Gordon Tom Fleming Andrew Powers Larry Canales Richard Sunshine Ed Thompson Faculty/Staff Women Shanie Israel Alina Yurkovsky Alise Shuart Nichole Foster-Hinds Amy Fossett Catherine Gaynor Jessica Bishop Shiva Behradnia Susan FitzGibbon Guada Cabido Laura Zimmerman Girls’ and Boys’ ”A” and “B” Basketball Teams

Fall Sports Closer

January 19, 2010

Fall Sports have ended, but not without the Cougars amassing some of their finest seasons in years.  The football, tennis and boys and girls soccer teams were all at the top of their league.  Here’s a look back at the fall sports season. ——————————————————————————————————————— Tennis:  This season the tennis team was undefeated, 10-0, with one of their best seasons in history.  Led by 8th grade history teacher Ms. Amendola and captains Savannah F., Nadia U., Kassandra F. and Mary Kate T., the team won big victories against Heritage Middle School 3-2 and Kent Place 3-2 and key rival Pingry 5-1. ——————————————————————————————————————- Boys Soccer:  Led by captains Tommy F. and Mauricio T., the A soccer team finished with a fantastic 9-1 record.  With a vast array of experienced and polished 8th graders that included Jack S., Luke P., Tommy and Mauricio the team was very balanced.  But the team also had one other major thing going for them.  They had one of the strongest seventh grade classes in years led by standouts Wesley W. and Malcolm D., who play for the New Jersey Rangers, which is the number one team in New Jersey and sixth in the country.  Wesley was recruited

MKA Returns to Playing “Cougar-Ball” in Victory

January 8, 2010
By

“The real glory is being knocked to your knees and then coming back. That’s real glory. That’s the essence of it” –Vince Lombardi Well…at least that’s what Coach Chapman told the boys before the tip-off of yesterday’s game.  The game, against the basketball powerhouse West Essex, was only hours after the Cougars first lost of the season. The focus of Chapman and Pacheco’s pre-game message to the boys was the need to return to playing “Cougar-Ball.”  Over the past few years, MKA has developed the reputation of being a very difficult and unpleasant team to play.  Their physical play, highlight by: a game long full-court press, non-stop fast breaking style and pressure defense, often times causes their opposition to quit and run to the bus.  Unfortunately for the boys of West Essex, this seemed to be the case yesterday (MKA 60 West Essex 34). The Cougars shared the ball unselfishly (28 assists, with Asante G getting 9 of them).  They were led in scoring by Max N (15 points) and rebounding by Nic H (15 boards). There was one play though that seemed to highlight the teams’ return to “Cougar Ball”.   With the Cougars up by many points and the

Cougars on Undefeated Run

Cougars on Undefeated Run

Don’t look now, but the football team may be on its greatest winning streak of all-time.  Over the last three years, the team has won its last nine games.  Last year, the Cougars finished with a perfect 6-0 record under the guidance of captain and quarterback, Rob P.  This year a new team, primarily composed of 8th graders, takes the field.  Led by captains Greg B., Elliot F. and Bernard P., the team has compiled a 3-0 record so far.  “The team works very hard every day of football season,” says Coach Weller. “We practice in every kind of weather, and never take a day off.  We have developed an attitude that we win together and we lose together, and that the only speed on the football field is 150%.  The players and the 8th graders, in particular, do a good job picking one another up when we need to work hard, instead of giving up or complaining.” Mr. Weller runs his team old school, using primarily a running game on offense.  With running backs Kyle B. and Asanti J,. they have a multi-dimensional attack that includes both power and speed.  In their first game, they completed a 40-0 romp of
