Sixth Grade Trip to Rutgers

November 3, 2009

On October 21, the sixth graders went to Rutgers University with TEAM Academy.  They arrived there at about 10:00 am.  The first thing they did was go on nature walk through the woods. They saw tons of different types of plants, plants, trees and berries. Then they got to plant their very own wildflower in a cup, though not all of them made it back. They then came to a great part–lunch. The student who buy a school lunch got a turkey sandwich with mayo and lettuce, a bag of chips, and an apple. It was good. After lunch, they went on a campus tour. We went in the gym, to the farm and around the lake. One section of the campus is really big. Overall, the Rutgers campus is really nice and and so are the people.

How do you say “yum” in Iceland?

The Big Mac has left the building. After a 16-year run, McDonalds has closed down in Iceland. The three restaurants, all in Reykjavik, have closed down after the cost of the Big Mac (not the meal, just the burger) has skyrocketed to $5.29, or 650 Krona. Analysts guess that it would be $6.36, or 780 Krona by the end of the year. This rise in price has a lot to do with the huge Icelandic economic crisis and the fact that all parts of the burger have to be imported from Germany, 1,371 miles away. The owner plans to reopen the restaurants under a new name, Metro, using only Icelandic products. It is not the first time that McDonald’s, which currently operates in more than 119 countries on six continents, has exited a country. Its only restaurant in Barbados closed after just six months in 1996 because of bad sales. In 2002, the company pulled out of seven countries that didn’t bring in profits as part of an international cost-cutting exercise. Spooky Secrets of MKA

October 27, 2009

Today we will be exploring why there is no room 225… Long ago, when your oldest brother was an 8th grader, there was a third room in the hallway leading to the library. They were rooms 224, 225, and 226. They were good…and they were tiny. In fact, no one could move in them. So one day, the old headmaster decided to rip out room 225. And from that day on, everyone had enough space. But, not everything was perfect. One day, while the walls were being ripped out, teacher came in for a meeting. However, he had misheard the location. The meeting was actually in room 125! He was a substitute, so he had no idea that the room was very unstable. He walked in and (wait for it…) fell through the floor to his bloody death a floor below. So, now his ghost now haunts the Crow’s Nest, as well as rooms 224 and 226. in fact, many members of the janitorial staff have quit after hearing his screams of pain, resulting from his death on the floor below.

The MKA Middle School can be a place that is big and hard to get used to when you first come to here, but if you know these tips and tricks, you will be able to navigate you way around the school as easy as pie! Tip #1: Make sure that you know the fastest way to get to your class. For example, there’s a stairway that’s across the hall from Mr. Flemming’s room that is never crowded, and is an easy access to the sixth grade hallway. Tip #2: Make sure you check Moodle three times. The first time in order to copy your homework down, into your planner. A second time so that you can complete your homework correctly, and one last time (after you do your homework) to make sure that you’ve done all of your work. Tip #3: Figure out a calendar of some kind. For instance, use iCal, your planner, Entourage, or any other kind of calendar. Calendars like these are helpful so that you can keep track of quizzes and tests, as well as when projects are due. Tip #4: With the new schedule, you now have more time during the day to complete
