A Letter From the Editor

Every year, MKA holds a Scholastic book fair–the largest one in the country! There are three visiting authors at each campus, and what seems like millions of books are brought into the school. Everyone loves the book fair; it’s something people can look forward to at the beginning of each year. In fact, this year’s book fair just ended, and I’m already looking forward to next year’s authors and, of course, books, book signings, book reviews, books, and more books! This year’s authors were R.L. Stein, author of the Goosebumps series and Fear series; Brandon Mull, author of the Fablehaven series, The Beyonders and The Candy Shop Wars; and Harlen Coben, author of Shelter. R.L Stein’s speech was great. He involved the entire school in writing a ghost story, then he told us his own childhood ghost stories. A fun fact: R.L. Stein writes scary stories because he “likes to give children the creeps.” Brandon Mull talked about how he gets his story ideas. People liked his presentation because he had visuals to go with what he was saying, which neither of the other authors had. A fun fact: Brandon Mull gets most of his story ideas from real-life experiences. Harlan Coben

Dear Cougars, The school year is well under way, and I hope you all are learning lots, joining clubs and playing sports. The air is crisp, the leaves are changing, fall is here! This year we are really excited about the brand new format for The Cougar Call. It is completely online and much more user friendly. The new online format provides a fast and easy way to get the latest news. Tabs for each subject make finding and reading your subject of choice much easier than last year’s PDF. Please take a moment to explore the new site. If you have any questions, concerns, suggestions or would even like to submit an article, please email us at cougarcall@mka.org. I hope you all have a great school year and that you continue to read The Cougar Call. As always, Kelsey O. Editor-in-Chief

Dear Cougars, Take your horse blinders off! Your latest  issue list Kanye West, The Jonas Brothers,  Taylor Swift, and Britney Spears as the  artists of the month. This excludes the facts:  Metallica’s Death Magnetic lasted on  the  charts longer then any of those artists,  (excluding the massive Fearless by Taylor  Swift) and AC/DC’s Black Ice was on the number one spot two weeks, and Slipknot God’s Wrath placed 2nd on the charts, with Kelly  Clarkson and Now! 30 ramming the same songs you just heard down your throats. The fact that  you haven’t mentioned any of these bands feels a lot like a snub to me. Just because I can’t hear any of these songs on Z‐100 or the new radio station  that bought out K‐Rock doesn’t mean that they are  any less important! If you’re going to comment on music, comment on all the music!
