We are the users of the world that we have lived on for hundreds of years. Even though we think that everything should be luxury for us, we don’t deserve it. Even now, the fires from many different places and gases are burning through the ozone layer. The ozone layer is a protective filter that surrounds our planet. It is our responsibility to protect the ozone layer. By saving it, we are saving ourselves. See, the ozone layer is what protects us from the harmful waves of the sun. Even though you may think this not true, it is. The sun projects different gasses that the ozone layer blocks. The world is harmed by more than just gas and other pollutants. It is inhabited by us. Humans have evolved from a world with no technology to a world where there seems to be more technology than trees. The world before technology was filled with better wonders than gray, metal cities that are not beautiful to the eye.  The number of trees cut down each year is around 3 billion to 6 billion each year! Well New Year’s is just a month away! New Year’s eve is on Saturday, December 31,2011. New Year’s day is on Tuesday, January 1,2011.  Even in faraway places people are preparing for the new year. Preparations are now underway for the 26th London’s New Year’s Day Parade set to take place on January 1st 2012. London’s New Year’s Day Parade 2012, is the first official event in a year of celebrations to mark Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. London’s New Year’s Day Parade 2012 is also the first official event in London’s Olympic year. The summer olympics will take place in London in 2012. The start of the parade starts in Berkley street and goes past Dover, Albemarie, OLd Bond, and Sackville Street. The parade goes through Cockspur and Whitehall Street. Then it ends in Parliament Square.

The Life of Prince Chunk

You have probably heard of other princes, like Prince Charming.  Well, there is a prince who is more valiant, caring, and definitely “healthy.”  His name is Prince Chunk (aka Princess Chunk, Captain Chunk, real name: Powder). Here is his story.  On July 28, 2008, he was found abandoned on the beach of Voorhees, NJ by animal control and weighed in at forty-four pounds.  At the shelter, he was notorious for his incompatibility.  His owner, an elderly Voorhees resident, had abandoned him because she didn’t have enough money to take care of him. After being adopted by a different family, he lost lost 22 pounds.  He has only fallen two pounds short of the world record .  He has made television appearances on Live with Regis and Kelly, Fox News, Good Morning America, and MSNBC. Sadly, this short-haired tabby died on November 21, 2010 from a heart disease. However, his legacy lives on.  His charity (The Prince Chunk Foundation) donates money to families that are not able to afford pets.  As a result, Prince Chunk is one of the greatest princes that ever lived.  Here is his website: http://www.princechunkfoundation.org/.

2011 Holiday Reading

The holiday reading is a day that the fire is lit in the library and all grades can come down; every teacher can share their favorite holiday story. It is a tradition that started a long time ago, even before Mr. Ruddy came to the school. It was started by another MKA librarian who worked at the school year ago. Mr. Ruddy enjoys sharing his stories with students. This year, he wants to share The Night Before Christmas, a pop up book. Mr. Ruddy loves the illustrations. He will also read The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming, a Hanukkah story by Lemony Snicket. Readers at the holiday reading come and share stories from different countries and faiths. This year, the holiday reading is on Friday, December 16th, which is a D day on the middle school calendar.

On September 17, 2011, near 1 World Trade Center, a group of protesters came to Zuccotti Park to object to the fact that 1% of people in America control the income of another 40%. Since then, many people have come for different reasons. One man at a Press-Media stand said, “I’m here because I share the rage of so many of us that are here with regards to the corporate greed that has been manifested for the last 15-20 years.” The man said, “Something’s awry. Something is askew, and it needs to change.” A lady at the “Knit for the 99%” stand said, “As long as people are staying, we will be coming on Sundays.” She has been making squares that are to be knitted together into blankets for the occupiers. She also allows people to come up to the stand and knit more squares. She said there are probably around sixty squares. There are many health concerns because of the clusters of people sleeping there. A doctor who was present in the park said, “People have a lot of concerns about getting the flu vaccine, so just trying to address those concerns and encourage people to think about how

Population Officially 7 Billion

The population is seven billion. Seven billion might be a big number, but if that many people were to stand shoulder to shoulder, they would fill up Los Angeles. Two people die and five people are born every second, so basically three more people populate the earth every second. Imagine how many people are born within twenty-four hours! It would take 200 years just to count to seven billion.
