Cougars on Undefeated Run

Don’t look now, but the football team may be on its greatest winning streak of all-time.  Over the last three years, the team has won its last nine games.  Last year, the Cougars finished with a perfect 6-0 record under the guidance of captain and quarterback, Rob P.  This year a new team, primarily composed of 8th graders, takes the field.  Led by captains Greg B., Elliot F. and Bernard P., the team has compiled a 3-0 record so far.  “The team works very hard every day of football season,” says Coach Weller. “We practice in every kind of weather, and never take a day off.  We have developed an attitude that we win together and we lose together, and that the only speed on the football field is 150%.  The players and the 8th graders, in particular, do a good job picking one another up when we need to work hard, instead of giving up or complaining.” Mr. Weller runs his team old school, using primarily a running game on offense.  With running backs Kyle B. and Asanti J,. they have a multi-dimensional attack that includes both power and speed.  In their first game, they completed a 40-0 romp of

Shattered: The Story Of Steriods in Baseball

Shattered: The Story Of Steriods in Baseball

When I was ten, baseball couldn’t have been more perfect. Everything about the game fascinated me. I loved to play it, watch it and read about the players who became my heroes. Even though baseball players could hit a ball 500 feet and throw 90 mph, I realized they were still human beings. I knew they made mistakes. I just didn’t realize how big those mistakes could be. October 1988: Washington Post baseball writer Thomas Boswell claims Jose Canseco is “the most conspicuous example of a player who has made himself great with steroids.”  Canseco denies the claims.  Canseco, the bronzed Oakland Athletic slugger, has just become the first player to hit 40 home runs and have 40 steals in a single season.  He goes on to win the MVP award at the end of the year.  This sets in motion the most devastating scandal ever to hit professional sports. Over its 141 year history, baseball has endured many hardships and weathered many scandals, from the notorious spitball era, when players would rub tobacco and dirt on the ball, making it impossible to see it, to the Black Sox scandal of 1919.  Baseball has come out damaged but intact.  It survived

How do you say “yum” in Iceland?

October 27, 2009

The Big Mac has left the building. After a 16-year run, McDonalds has closed down in Iceland. The three restaurants, all in Reykjavik, have closed down after the cost of the Big Mac (not the meal, just the burger) has skyrocketed to $5.29, or 650 Krona. Analysts guess that it would be $6.36, or 780 Krona by the end of the year. This rise in price has a lot to do with the huge Icelandic economic crisis and the fact that all parts of the burger have to be imported from Germany, 1,371 miles away. The owner plans to reopen the restaurants under a new name, Metro, using only Icelandic products. It is not the first time that McDonald’s, which currently operates in more than 119 countries on six continents, has exited a country. Its only restaurant in Barbados closed after just six months in 1996 because of bad sales. In 2002, the company pulled out of seven countries that didn’t bring in profits as part of an international cost-cutting exercise.
