Overstressed Kids

Overstressed Kids

By Dan Y, 8th Grader Parents commonly say, “I wish I was a kid again.” Many kids don’t understand why adults say this. Parents don’t have to go to school, they don’t have to study for tests, they don’t get grades. What most kids don’t understand until they’re older is how much more stressful it can be being an adult as opposed being a kid. Kids stress themselves out too much trying to get good grades, or trying to get better in sports. Many kids take their childhood for granted, and they regret it when they are older. Middle school is a time leading up to high school; it is not meant to be very stressful. Middle school teaches kids how to manage their workload, and succeed in school, but how a student does in middle school is not going to affect the rest of their life forever. As kids get older and older, it is understandable that they have more stress; however, kids14 years old and younger shouldn’t be worrying about anything too much. Kids need to know that when applying for a job, or trying to get into college, nobody is going to look at how you did on

Is Facebook Removing the Face from Social Interaction?

Is Facebook Removing the Face from Social Interaction?

By Ben R, 8th Grader As the minutes tick by from ten to eleven pm, there seems to be only one place to be, Facebook. And whether it’s checking status updates, reading news feed, or posting that one last sarcastic comment on your friend’s wall, time is not of the essence.  Let’s face it, most have probably been heare, staying up late until they get the indulgence of seeing that one “notification,” and while I personally don’t use Facebook, there are, no doubt, many that find themselves glued to the screen, craving a social connection. In the “Facebook” era of social networking, communication and constant output is a necessity in order to stay well-connected. And although social-networking sites typically encourage connections among strangers; like on MySpace, where people converge through common interests, or online dating, where the whole point is to meet and greet new faces; Facebook is geared toward helping people maintain existing relationships. The site basically serves as a self-updating address book, keeping users connected no matter their geographical position. “There are people from my past life that I never would have tracked through 10 job changes and 20 e-mail changes,” says Nicole Ellison, an assistant professor at Michigan State

The Shepherds of the 60s

The Shepherds of the 60s

The Beatles were much more than just a band. They were revolutionary.       By Sarah W, 8th Grader Society is like a herd of sheep following a shepherd. The shepherd is typically a celebrity, and the sheep are the people. We follow what celebrities do like robots. Unconvinced? Look up for a moment, and watch as the teenage boy next to you quickly flicks his hair to the side, making every strand of hair perfectly aligned. Who was the shepherd that led the hair-flicking sheep? Justin Bieber, the shepherd puppy and pop star who one day flicked his hair out his face, but instead ended creating the most popular trend amongst all teenage boys. Before Bieber’s era, however, the 60s generation was following shepherds that changed the world with new trends, styles, music, and ideas. Who were these shepherds, one might ask? The answer: the Beatles, the most talented, and unique group of men to walk planet Earth. That’s only half of it. Unlike today, no one dared step out of line in the 50s and early 60s, as it was frowned upon. The Beatles, however, were different and spontaneous, thus were those always off the line. They

What to Expect in the Eighth Grade Science Project

March 29, 2011
By

by former staffers and current ninth graders Kassie F and Kelsey O For students at the Middle School, eighth grade is equivalent to one thing: the science project. Every student at the middle school dreads the science project from the time they enter 4th grade. Who could not? The science project takes over your entire eighth grade year. The project runs for more than 4 months, and is worth more than 70% of your 3rd and 4th quarter grades. Though all of this may make the project seem intimidating, it’s not as bad as most may think. At the moment, eighth graders are celebrating the end of the science project. We just finished presentation week, and we are now spending class time answering questions about the project. From personal experience this year, I can honestly assure middle school students that the science project is not all that it’s worked up to be. The hardest part is probably picking a topic and figuring out your variables, but teachers help the students with that through and through. After picking a topic, eighth graders spend about a month solely researching their two variables. All of this background research then goes into a “Background

MKA Returns to Playing “Cougar-Ball” in Victory

January 8, 2010
By

“The real glory is being knocked to your knees and then coming back. That’s real glory. That’s the essence of it” –Vince Lombardi Well…at least that’s what Coach Chapman told the boys before the tip-off of yesterday’s game.  The game, against the basketball powerhouse West Essex, was only hours after the Cougars first lost of the season. The focus of Chapman and Pacheco’s pre-game message to the boys was the need to return to playing “Cougar-Ball.”  Over the past few years, MKA has developed the reputation of being a very difficult and unpleasant team to play.  Their physical play, highlight by: a game long full-court press, non-stop fast breaking style and pressure defense, often times causes their opposition to quit and run to the bus.  Unfortunately for the boys of West Essex, this seemed to be the case yesterday (MKA 60 West Essex 34). The Cougars shared the ball unselfishly (28 assists, with Asante G getting 9 of them).  They were led in scoring by Max N (15 points) and rebounding by Nic H (15 boards). There was one play though that seemed to highlight the teams’ return to “Cougar Ball”.   With the Cougars up by many points and the
